The Motte and bailey castle created by William the Conqueror
How did Castles beginin England?
The
first person to make a castle in England was King William the firstperson to create the first castle. When
William had wars on, he managed to think of an extremely efficient way of
getting all his soldiers, knights, servants, guardsmen and all the people who
live in a castle very quickly, at the same time being able to set up his
castles very quickly. A
castle is used
for both a home and a castle. It is a type of fortified structure built in
Europe and the Middle East during the middle Ages. William
the Conqueror built the
first castles you can still see the
tower of London.
The Normans were master castle builders.
After 1066,
England witnessed a massive castle building programme on the orders of William
the Conqueror. The
first motte and bailey castles were built.
Once William had firmly established his rule in England, he built huge stone
keep castles. By the time of Edward I, concentric castles were being
built.
William The Conqueror
William was duke of Normandy and,
as William I, the first Norman king of England. He defeated and killed the last
Anglo-Saxon king of England at the Battle of Hastings.
William was born in around 1028, in
Falaise, Normandy the illegal son of
Robert I, Duke of Normandy. On his father's death bed in 1035, William was recognised as heir
with his great uncle serving as regent. In 1042, he began to take more personal
control. From 1046 until 1055, he dealt with a series of impressive mutinies.
William's political and military successes helped him in talks to marry
Matilda, daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders in 1053.
William The Conqueror
This is William the Conqueror
William the conqueror is the creator of the Motte and Bailey. He is also winner of the battle of Hastings.
During the battle of Hastings he brought it in a boat so his army could build
it quicker. This is a painting of him. This
here is the first English castle Motte and Bailey which is also the
most popular English castle design. It was a mainly a French structure made by
William the conqueror who used it in the battle of Hastings to defend his army
and himself to earn his wealthy name. The Motte and Bailey was made quickly as
they brought it to England in a boat (like the cupboards you get from Ikea).
