Key parts of castles
The very first thing which tells you it was a castle was the moat or ditch which were very deep. The deep water itself stopped inmates from crossing. The only way possible to enter a castle was through the drawbridge.
After crossing the drawbridge you reach the curtain or wall. It can survive a battering ram it was 8ft-20ft wide that’s as wide as a to story building.
A gatehouse was built into a curtain. It started as a door people would just go in or out of but through time that all changed.it changed because this was were enemies normally chose to an iron gate in addition follow the thick wooden gate. Small holes called murdering holes were added to pour burning tar on the enemies.
Towers were built into the curtain. They were there to make sure people could see over the wall. Later for keeping prisoners as the great tower of London is fondly known for.
The keep was the very highest point in the castle and the center of defense. The strongest and safest point in castle.
Inside a normal castle was many things which includes kitchen to cook meat . The great hall where everyone eat and the servants slept .the stables were they kept there castle livestock. And the chapel.
The tower of London
The great tower of London was originally made by William the conqueror. It is over 900 years old. The tower of London as you may of hared is better known as a prison than as a castle. Today the tower has the purpose of keeping the crown jewels safe.

Warwick castle
Warwick castle has changed over times from Motte and bailey.
A keep used to stand on the Motte which is about on south west side around about west of the castle, although most of the structure dates from the post-medieval period. In the 17th century the Motte was landscaped with the addition of a path. The bailey was the new castle and is surrounded by stone curtain walls which makes the walls.
When Warwick Castle was rebuilt in the reign of King Henry the 2nd it had a new layout with the buildings now against the curtain walls. The castle is surrounded by a moat on the north side of the island where there is no protection at all from the river or the old Motte . The walls is 130 metres long by 82 metres wide. The two entrances to castle are in the north and west sides. There was at first a a drawbridge over the moat in the north east. In the centre of the north west wall is a gateway with Clarence and Bears towers on either side. The buildings line the eastern side of the castle, facing the River Avon. These buildings include the great hall, the library, bedrooms, and the chapel.

· Guardhouse: A guard house/guard building/security shack, is used to keep your personal security equipment e.g. swords, guns (they didn't have guns in those days) shields, cannon balls etc. etc.
· Keep: A keep is basically like a castle tower or peel towers.
· Bailey: A bailey was first made in them medieval times 1066-1068. A bailey is piece of land within a castle which contains different buildings e.g. blacksmith, kitchen, chapel etc. etc.
· Pinnacle: A pinnacle is an ornament which is in the shape or a cup, crown or small turret
· Turret: A turret is a small building that comes out vertically from another building.
· Bartizan: A Bartizan is a wall mounted turret which overhangs a wall
· Chemise: A chemise is a low wall which encircles the keep.
· Covered Parapet walk: A parapet is an extension to a wall such a balcony or walking path
· Corbel: A corbel is a piece of stone, wood or metal which hangs of a wall.
